Our Story

Three generations of the Calloway family have farmed this land. Rooted in Vermont, growing with purpose.

The Calloway Family

Planted in 1987.
Still growing strong.

Margaret and Harold Calloway bought 84 acres of Vermont hillside in 1987 with a simple dream: to grow real food for real families. No shortcuts, no chemicals — just good soil, hard work, and patience.

When the organic certification movement took hold in the early 1990s, GreenRoots was among the first farms in Vermont to apply. Margaret recalls, "We weren't farming organically because it was trendy — we were doing it because it was right."

Today, their son Daniel and daughter-in-law Sarah manage day-to-day operations alongside their children, making GreenRoots a true three-generation farm. The same fields Harold first tilled now yield over 60 certified organic products each season.

"We don't farm for profit first. We farm because this land deserves to be cared for, and families deserve food that's worth eating."

Our Mission

To grow food that honors the land, nourishes the community, and passes something worth keeping on to the next generation.

How We Farm

Sustainability Practices

Every decision we make is guided by one question: will this leave the land better than we found it?

PHASE_01

Cover Cropping & Soil Building

Every fall, we plant cover crops — clover, rye, and vetch — to protect and enrich the soil over winter. This reduces erosion and feeds the microbial life that makes our soil so productive.

On-Farm Composting

Nothing leaves the farm as waste. Crop residues, kitchen scraps, and animal manure are composted in our large windrow system and returned to the fields as rich, living fertilizer.

Integrated Pest Management

Instead of pesticides, we use beneficial insects, companion planting, row covers, and crop rotation to manage pests naturally. Our farm is home to thousands of ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.

Water Conservation

Our drip irrigation system delivers water directly to plant roots, reducing usage by 40% compared to overhead sprinklers. Rain barrels and a small pond store water during wet months for dry spells.
